Deaf, Blind & Extremely Dumb, Because Of A Smart Phone

Thanks to modern technology, it would appear that people don’t have the attention span they used to (right about now, there are many who have already stopped reading this).

In this day and age folks usually have their faces buried in some sort of electronic device, going from one file, one game, one tweet to another, never taking the time to look up and absorb what is going on around them.

I’m guessing you could commit a major crime in a crowded place and if all these people with their devices didn’t actually take a picture of it, no one would be able to give authorities an actual description of what took place.

Just this week, within the span of about ten minutes, I was reminded of how insular people have become, in two separate situations. In the first one, I got into the elevator at my office on the ground floor and pushed the button to go to the 7th Floor. Just before the doors closed, a guy, whose face was fixated on his Smart Phone walks into the elevator and looks up long enough to press the button for the 6th Floor.

The doors close, the elevator rises and a recorded voice, in two official languages, announces that we have indeed reached the 6th Floor. But our young friend, who probably still hadn’t noticed that I was in the elevator, is just standing there in front of the open doors. It was only as the doors closed in on him that he looked up long enough to realize that his floor had now come and gone. We then rode up one floor to mine. As I got out I turned to him and said, “Gee, I guess you missed your floor. Too bad there isn’t an app for that!”

What could be so important during the less than 30 second trip that one hasn’t even noticed that the elevator has stopped on their floor? Has their Smart Phone rendered their senses numb? Can they not hear the ding of the elevator or the recorded voice? Does their peripheral vision not pick up the added light of the open elevator doors? Hasn’t their personal motion sensor let them know that the elevator is no longer moving? Does their Smart Phone contain nuclear launch codes?

I know I could have probably been a little more helpful and gently reminded him that he was at his floor, but for all I know that could have probably scared the dear boy into a coronary.

The second incident came as I was walking toward our office doors. I ran my pass card across the sensor to get in, just as I noticed a colleague coming the other way. He too had his face buried in an electronic device, thumbs all a flutter, as he walked like an unmanned drone towards the now open portal. With my hand holding the open door, I stood back and actually watched him bounce off the door frame trying to get through. Would he have not even tried to open the door if I wasn’t holding it? How do people navigate around like this on a daily basis?

And a few days later I noticed that Twitter was down. When it came back, there was a story that crossed the wires saying the service was out for five minutes; a whole 300 seconds. The plethora of Facebook comments during that time and for the half hour after Twitter was back up were written with the urgency of a person who had just witnessed a puppy locked in a hot car.

And speaking of cars, at the beginning of the summer, I was stopped at a traffic light. I was at the corner, but not in the pedestrian lane, yet a young woman, basking in the glow of her Blackberry, crossed in front of me and actually bounced off my hood because she wasn’t looking at where she was going. But she did manage to pull herself away from the screen long enough to give me a dirty look because I had the audacity to sit at an intersection in a stationary vehicle and didn’t back up into the car behind me so that she could cross the street by rote! Horses with blinders see more than these people do.

I’m beginning to understand how the Israelites felt, following Moses around the desert for 40 years. He probably spent too much time staring at the tablets to pay attention to where he was going.

There was a common phrase older folks would use, but I never had any time for; “Stop and smell the roses.” Nowadays, nobody even notices the roses, unless it’s a YouTube video showing the flower bloom in time lapse photography.

That’s the Stuph – the way I see it

Photo Phollies #5 - The Bitter Homicidal Rodent

Faux Stories From Real Pictures

“Hey, you . . . you, with the camera! What the hell are you looking at? Do I amuse you? Am I funny to you like a clown? Yeah, you probably heard a similar line from that runt of an actor Joe Pesci in that gangster flick. Well, he stole that line and the voice from me, but that’s a story for another day. Right now, I want to get back to YOU!

You just waltzed out here and snapped my picture, like some woodland paparazzi. Do you think I’m a cuddly creature like that flying cartoon squirrel who’s in an inappropriate relationship with a moose? By the way, I pitched the original story about a flying squirrel to the studios, without his big walking hat rack of a companion and they passed, but that’s a story for another day.

You don’t think I can hurt you? Typical human! You think just because I don’t have opposable thumbs I can’t take you on? Listen pal, me and others like me would have wiped the whole lot of you off the face of the earth if you hadn’t come up with door knobs. Well look around! Do you see any doors out here?

The problem with you people is you don’t know who to fear. You’re scared of birds. A tubby British guy even made a movie about them. That original screenplay was about squirrels. Some peon in a suit changed it, but that’s a story for another day.

Right now, you’re in my space. Look deep into my cold unblinking eyes. These are the eyes of someone who knows that if you take one step closer, I’LL KILL YOU!”

That’s the Stuph – the way I see it!

The Mystery Of The Teachers’ Lounge

My career has afforded me the opportunity to interview a myriad of people on a plethora of topics, asking questions on some of the great mysteries of our time. And of course, with each and every one of us, the actual maturing process answers many of the deep burning questions we may have had in childhood, like why our parents sometimes needed to be alone; why Betty-Lou was so protective of the contents of her pencil case in 5th Grade; and why you never sneak up behind a war vet and yell “bang!”

But one question has seemed to go unanswered. Does anyone know what really went on behind the door to the teachers’ lounge? Whether it was elementary or high school, the secrets that room held were legendary.

There were stories of students who actually ventured into this educational enclave. These were the stories of legend. Nobody knew these students. All we heard was that they walked in; then vanished!

There were many theories as to what went on. It was a topic, both then and now, that’s discussed in hushed tones. Was there a speakeasy on the other side? Was it a replica of Hugh Hefner’s grotto? Was it a casino where they played Baccarat in dinner jackets like James Bond, or an illegal gambling parlour, like in the movie The Sting?

As students, we sometimes used to hang around the teachers’ lounge door, waiting for one of them to either enter or leave, if only to get a peek inside to the proceedings. This was a time in the 60’s and 70’s when everybody smoked, so the only thing we ever saw when the door opened was an escaping white cloud, as if they had just finished electing a new Pope inside.

And teachers were very quick to enter or leave the room. They would look both ways before they opened the door to make sure prying eyes didn’t learn their secrets. Security at the entrance was tight, much like at airports today, or perhaps more realistically, like trying to cross into East Germany during the Cold War.

We began to fantasize about life in the lounge. While we were brown-bagging it to school with our lunches, the teachers must have had a full catered cruise ship spread in there. During recess manicures, pedicures, full massages and relaxing steams must have been taking place. We knew from the smoke that tobacco in all forms was plentiful, but there also had to be an abundance of food, alcohol and other bacchanalian vices that belied the otherwise buttoned-down world of those entrusted with our education.

Somewhere in this world the people who never had a first name, folks we only knew as “Mr” “Mrs” or “Miss,” must have let their hair down and cut loose and that place had to be the teachers’ lounge.

As we got older and started to make decisions about where life would lead us, we thought less of the lounge. That’s because we knew that some of our numbers would become teachers themselves and surely they would share with the rest of us what we all yearned to know as kids.

But that wasn’t the case. As our trusted student comrades became teachers themselves, they learned the secret handshake, got the special rings (which I believe contains a cyanide pill should they be captured and forced to talk about the lounge) and entered the Star Chamber.

And so the mystery continues to loom. I have very few regrets in life. However I sometimes wonder why I didn’t just make a break for it one day in school and barge in to find out what was going on. But then I think back and remember those stories of legend; the ones where braver souls than I ventured in, only to disappear forever. And I come to the conclusion that some questions are best left unanswered and some secrets deserve to remain a mystery.

That’s the Stuph – the way I see it
